Canadian Government Recommends the International Pacific Halibut Commission Regulate Halibut Bycatch in the North Pacific

In a letter received just before the Holidays, the IPHC received a letter from the Canadian government recommending that the IPHC must: 1) communicate its authority over issues that affect coast-wide stocks, and 2) take a more active role in exercising its authority to regulate the incidental catch of Pacific Halibut in all regulatory areas.

This letter comes at a time of decreasing Halibut abundance throughout the North Pacific and at a time where the North Pacific Council continues to avoid taking meaningful action to reduce Halibut Bycatch.
